Nike launches 'Mamba Week' initiative to pay tribute to the late basketball legend. Read on to know all the details.
To celebrate the life and times as well as illustrious career of Hall of Fame basketball player and athlete, Kobe Bryant, Nike launched ‘Mamba Week’ on August 23rd - what would have been the legendary, Los Angeles Lakers' 42nd birthday.
The following day, August 24th saw the release of a special ‘City Edition’ of the Lakers jersey and the day has been declared as ‘Kobe Bryant Day’ in honour of the two jersey numbers 8/24 the athlete wore during his time as one of the greatest players to have ever graced the courts.
Nike has worked closely with the late legend's wife, Vanessa Bryant to finalise the proceedings for the initiative. The weeklong homage will see Bryant’s signature sneakers and jerseys being released for the first time since his untimely death in January, earlier this year.
Nike is also expected to release the Kobe 5 Protro - pictures of which surfaced earlier last week - the sneaker Bryant wore during the 2009 – 2010 season which the LA Lakers went on to win, marking Bryant’s 5th NBA championship. The upcoming collab with streetwear label Undefeated will celebrate Bryant’s induction into the Hall Of Fame.
Along with the above-mentioned donation, Nike will also continue to fund and operate the 'Mamba League', a grassroots youth league launched in 2017 in association with the Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles.
Additionally, a powerful new advertisement called ‘Better: Mamba Forever’ honoured the legacy of the legendary player and the 'Mamba' mentality. The ad is narrated by rapper Kendrick Lamar and celebrates the life of Bryant both on and off the court. Throughout the ad, Kendrick reminds fans how Bryant encouraged everyone to ‘be better’ in every aspect of their lives.
Since Bryant’s birthday falls amidst the ongoing playoffs, several players on all 16 playoff teams are expected to wear Kobe signature sneakers to join Nike’s tribute to the legend.
The initiative of Mamba Week commemorates not just the legendary basketball player that Kobe Bryant was, but the overall legendary person that he remained his entire life. Kobe will be remembered till the end of time.
