Being the youngest member in a household of 16, Adi was brought up in the midst of music. With each member of the family more musically inclined than the next - his mother plays the harmonium and brother plays the guitar - Adi, too, delved into the world of music at a very young age.

Introduced early on to generations of music filtering across genres - from Mohammed Rafi and Aretha Franklin, to Lil Wayne and Kanye West - the artist recounts beginning to learn music at the tender age of six, playing the tabla and piano, and soon advanced onto drums before he began writing poetry in the seventh grade.

"I was always influenced by James Brown, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, they had this feel for music that you can very clearly hear in their music. While I do have the musical theory to back me up, I think its so much more important to have that feel in my music."

The rapper discloses how he tried working a few jobs outside of music around the age of 16, only to realise that pursuing music was his true passion and calling. Adi’s rhythmic background and culmination of the gifted, musical hand-me-downs, made him start working towards creating an entirely new and unique sound that resonated with his story.

With two EPs already under his belt - 2019’s three-track ‘Testing Waters’ and the four-track ‘Old Me Knew You’ that released earlier this year - the multi-talented singer/songwriter recently released his newest genre-fluid, five-track EP, ‘PIGEONHOLED’ on October 16th.

The record is a culmination of the wide array of melodic influences he has had growing up and a representation of the versatile artist that he is. ‘PIGEONHOLED’ in its most literal sense means being constricted or restricted to doing one type of thing - and contrary to this interpretation, Adi's record delivers anything but. Amalgamating and incorporating hip-hop, funk, soul, R&B, and blues across all five tracks, the EP is rare, dynamic and multifaceted as the musician himself.

Each songs represents a feeling of being isolated and constricted, whether that is physically or mentally. From the funk-forward track ‘COP CAR’ that discusses the current socio-political situation around the world - and features an impressive verse from Srinagar-based hip-hop artist Ahmer - to a more R&B centred cadence in 'LOCKED IN’, which portrays a solitary situation turning into a reflection of a romantic gesture, each song has its own story to tell.

The track ‘BACK HOME’ metaphorically translates to the artist feeling “location-less,” of not knowing where he belongs and the record is complete with the track ‘.22that is supported by a music video, where Adi talks about feeling mentally imprisoned.

"With this latest EP, we do a lot more than just hip-hop on it, I was trying to create a feeling in my music that you can understand when you listen to it. You don’t really have to be a fan of hip-hop or R&B to like it, its like a mood that you get. My music is spontaneous, impulsive and free and people get that kind of feeling from it."

Adi

Drawing creative inspiration from the people around him with lyrics that stem from personal experience and interaction, the artist believes in making music that feels entirely authentic and resonates with him on a personal level. In an attempt to create a time capsule of sorts with his art, Adi reveals he wants to make music people can listen to years from today and understand what he was going through in that exact moment.

"I don’t think by any means I’ve found my sound or anything, its still a very explorative place that I’m in. I really like working with a bunch of different people and producers, thats the best way to get a feel for different methods for making different music. I have never written any song that is inauthentic by any means, or that I didn’t actually go through. I just want someone to be able to listen to these songs 10 years down the line and still understand why I wrote it."

Adi

After working with different producers over the years from India, Canada, Thailand and the Philippines, the collaborative efforts along with the cultural diversity have helped the artist find his stance as an individual artist in India. Identified by his range of talent to combine a manifold of genres like hip-hop, blues and R&B all in the same project, Adi deems himself to stand out as an all-round, multifaceted artist.

Adi

"The coolest part about the culture here in India is that people are willing accept a lot from hip-hop because it is so new, you can see peoples longevity and experiment to figure out what they like. In the next 5-6 years Indian hip-hop will become very distinct because we would’ve spent a lot of time developing it."

The artist is taking no breaks and has two more EPs up his sleeve that are in the works, aimed at a release for later this year.

Adi is also currently working on his debut album called ‘SUMMER FRIENDS' - an exciting collaborative project where he features all his favourite people that he’s encountered in the industry, slated to release in the summer of 2021.
