Toffle: The Hand Made Bioscope Of Self Expression

Curating a rather fresh perspective of self-expression through the craft of making clothes, Toffle is taking over the streetwear league. Read on to know more!

Imagine art displays, and the first thing that flashes through your mind is a clean white wall with metallic frames showcasing varied iterations of an artist’s ‘vision’ in well-lit, spacious corridors. Well, not any more!

Kashish Gemini and Brij’s brainchild Toffle is changing the way art is perceived and portrayed, through the brand’s creative apparel. Painting the fabric canvas with an array of hand-done embellishments, Toffle draws context from the complexities and nuances of life. The venture encapsulates the zeitgeist through the undiluted and unadulterated creative expression.

With no particular initial inclination towards fashion, Toffle emerged from Gemini’s urge to find his true calling. What began as a business that promoted various local marketplaces in 2016, soon changed its course and became a self-driven clothing venture. The founder’s dissent with the initial plan and the response from the market was one of the few factors that instigated the duo into making something of their own.

The inception was followed by a series of trial and error, while gaining more perspective about fashion as subject and streetwear as a concept, thus establishing the brand's roots as a non-traditional streetwear label.

Placing a special focus on self-expression through the work, Toffle’s ideology acts as a medium for people to express themselves through the labels ever-evolving creative outlook. Reinstating the idea of storytelling and communicating with a creative aid, Toffle believes that streetwear isn’t limited to simply "flexing", contrary to popular belief.

The label has been mainlining streetwear with the use of highly coveted surface ornamentation techniques, while combining it with subjects and inspirations that are intrigue worthy - ranging from disruptive dystopia to the nuances of millennial life.

Gemini believes in the process of making conscious decisions, and expects the same when one thinks towards purchasing one of the brand’s creations. Toffle’s offerings are more than just statement pieces for the wardrobe. Each and every piece is the result of an underlying thought that’s being communicated through the use of an artistic medium, thus adding multifold value and personal touch.

“I want people to see why I made the piece, to understand and value it. Only buy it if they connect with it - with me. This is my story, that’s how it’s different. And the same goes for every other label too.”

Imbibing authenticity in each and every aspect of the label’s working, Toffle derives its name from a word that Gemini invented - just as Shakespeare used to - because it sounded simple and memorable to him. Talking about the label's creative process, Gemini mentions the versatility of venturing into multiple genres of design and not being limited to a certain approach or theme/concept. The designer refers to his creativity as a continuous learning process, with massive amounts of experimentation going behind each collection.

“Design is about two major things, the quality and aesthetics. At the core of it, the process is very simple, we try to make products we’d love to wear ourselves.”

Gemini also mentions how all the collections are distinctively different from one another and while there are similar functional aspects in a few designs, they all represent a different personality.

While having an assortment of some indigenous creations, Toffle is known for its customised pieces as well. Involving the wearer in majorly all steps of the design process of a custom made piece, Gemini reveals just how flexible the entire procedure really is. Customers can lead with all sorts of inputs, right from the fit to the fabric and the designer will translate them into artwork. However, on the other hand, the patrons can give a general brief of what they are looking for and the Toffle team unleash all their creativity to make a one-of-a-kind masterpiece for the individual.

DOTNA, short for Dawn Of The New Age, is Toffle’s newest collection. As the name suggests, the collection portrays the youth and its attributes with the use of unabashed quotes and typography, combined with "OG" street fits and a mix of techniques like deconstruction, embroidery, dyeing etc. The collection also features the use of a peculiar verse from the Bhagavad Gita, focusing on looking beyond the obvious and moving beyond boundaries.

Every designer perceives the term “culture” differently, and Gemini’s perception is rather unique. Making the best out of things known to every creative individual out there, but enriching them with an emotive quality has set Toffle apart in terms of representation. Involving and engaging with the people unleashes creativity and extends the dialogue, helping the culture branch out further.

“I do my bit. I try to get people involved into making their piece rather than just ordering it online and expecting the delivery. I love to make custom stuff for people. That way I can put more value in the products for them. I believe it is the need of the hour for people to see value in what they wear and how they live their life. That's how the culture will develop. To help them understand the true meaning of fast fashion which is way more than just Zara/H&M. When people start acting consciously, things will start to change around here. Otherwise all we're doing here is selling stuff.”
