Minions Collaborations Take Over The Globe

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the 'Despicable Me' series, Minions collaborated with brands worldwide. Here’s a look at some of the past collaborations as well as the latest ones.

Launched by Illumination Studios almost 10 years ago, the minions characters took the world by storm. The Despicable me franchise was one of the biggest hits by studio which boasts releases of several other animated blockbuster hits like 'The Secret Life Of Pets', 'The Grinch', 'Hop' and so many others. These films have highly influenced pop culture and have had collaborations with some of the biggest names in the fashion industry as well.

The iconic yellow coloured made-up language-speaking Minions have more or less been the centre of attention since the first movie of the Despicable Me franchise hit the theatres. Celebrating the 10th anniversary, we take a look at some of the best Minions themed collaborations of the past as well as those that will be releasing this year.

BAPE x Minions (2017)

Released to celebrate Despicable Me 3, the collection saw a fusion between BAPE’s famous baby Milo and the Minions. The special capsule collection comprised of BAPE essentials like hoodies and tees along with some pillow covers, masks, and a few more accessories.

The zips up hoodies were the craziest of the lot, maintaining the shape and design of a Minion when zipped all the way up. The collection featured multiple tee shirts in white, black, blue and yellow that had a mix of BAPE’s classic graphics and the minions motifs.

Away X Minions (2017)

Away x Minions also celebrated the release of Despicable Me 3 and took the Minions all over the world. The luggage company released bright yellow roll-away suitcases that came with multiple quirky features such as a leather tag in the shape of the Minion goggles and stickers.

The suitcases were released in three sizes and were produced in limited numbers. The collaboration was cited by many as ‘perfect for both kids and adults’. Along with the bright exterior, the cases came with a TSA-approved lock and built-in battery backup for charging electronics.

Puma x Minions (2017)

Puma partnered up with Minions and redesigned two of their most iconic silhouettes: Clyde and Disc Blazer. This capsule collection was also released to celebrate the third despicable me film.

The Puma Clyde sported a black upper with graphic minion insoles and liners. Along with that the shoes also had the Minions embroidered on the toe box.

The Disc Blazer contrasted the Clyde, dressed in an all-white upper this shoe has minions printed on the inlays along with the iconic minion goggles on the heel and tongue. To complement the shoes Puma had also released a backpack made with a mix of suede and leather that featured minute minion detailing.

Wrogn X Minions (2020)

Indian Cricket team’s star player Virat Kohli launched his apparel label Wrogn in 2014. Although a relatively young brand, their collaboration with Minions was a huge success. The collection was designed and created in partnership with the Universal Brand Development and licensing agent, Black White Orange, and Wrogn’s design team.

Released in August this year the collection featured 10 different designs and pieces. Consisting mainly of graphic tees, the collection was fairly simple but was a first for a homegrown Indian brand and received a positive response from fans all around.

Reebok x Minions (2020)

A couple of months after the release of the minions themed Shaqnosis, Reebok has unveiled the newest additions to their Reebok X Minions: Rise of Gru collection. The collection is inspired by and celebrates a number of characters that we will be seeing in the movie. The latest minion film centres around our favourite anti-hero 'Gru' and his dream of becoming the world's greatest supervillain!

The Instapump fury has gained a reputation for flashy collaborations and two new colourways have been added to this list and they achieves new heights of wild and colourful. The first colourway titled "Vicious 6", the shoe is inspired by "the world's most notorious collective of villains." Both the left and right pair of shoe use different colours, prints, textures, and materials.

The racing striped lining which also has spikes is inspired by Svengeance's roller derby uniform, other than that the shoe is decorated with zebra-striped pony hair, Nun Chuck's chariot design, red black and white midsoles.

The left shoe equally drastic with purple uppers and golden chain graphics, a faux stingray material on the heel that looks like Jean Claw's robotic crab arm.

The second colourway is inspired by our favourite Minions! These yellow and blue makeover depicting the notorious characters, suits the shoe perfectly. The pump button on the tongue sport a Minion eye motif and the sole of the shoes feature a graphic pattern.

The Club C silhouette is much simpler compared to the Instapump Fury. One of the colourway is dressed in the same yellow and blue colourway, and the shoe features graphic prints around the ankle collar and the text “Minion Powered” on the heel.

The second colourway of the Club C is a Villian inspired one, In contrast to the bright yellow 'minions' version, the 'Vicious 6' Club C is more subtle and retro.

Inspired by the 1970's feel of the film the shoe has been designed using corduroy, premium leather and also features a purple velvet lining and shag rug insoles.

The final shoe is inspired directly from the famous Gru's Lab. The Question Mid 'Gru's Lab' features a black and silver upper, where silver stands for the metals from Gru's lab.

The shoe also has glow in the dark 'slime' outsoles, neon green tubes that run along with the laces, semi-translucent outsoles, Gru's logo on the back, and the best part are the double-sided 'trap door' insoles that allow you to look at the lower half detailing.

The collection is set to release on the September 30th and will be available to purchase on the Reebok website.

With the fourth Despicable Me movie set to release in 2021, the coming year will be seeing a lot more collaboration between the yellow bean shaped characters and brands world wide.
